Our heritage

The 21st century has already delivered a full-scale revolution in the delivery and ownership of connections. Starting in 1996, there has been a quiet revolution but one that has seen our members deliver large-scale improvements in innovation, competition and service across the industry.

1996

The first Independent Gas Transporter (IGT) licences awarded

2000

Creation of the Association of Independent Gas Transporters (AIGT) to represent the views of Independent Gas Transporters (IGTs)

2004

The first Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) licences awarded

2008

Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs) form the Competitive Networks Association (CNA)

2019

Many areas of policy and regulation are common to both the AIGT and CNA and this trend is expected to continue as the UK focuses on the transition to net zero.

It was recognised that, together, the AIGT and CNA would achieve synergies from combining their respective skills, experience and memberships to achieve true industry collaboration

2020

At the start of 2020, the independent gas and electricity networks agreed to merge the AIGT and CNA into a single trade association, the Independent Networks Association (INA), to be the authoritative voice for Independent Networks in the UK

The INA is now well positioned to help shape the energy sector in the UK as we move forward towards a net-zero future.
